Harvey, Stephen. 1972. Film Comment 8, no. 3: 20–22.

Author Stephen Harvey presents an analysis of Charlie Chaplin’s 1940 film The Great Dictator, and in particular its political comedy and its relationship to the bulk of Chaplin’s film work. Harvey argues much of the comedy of the film comes from the “silent” sequences rather than the dialogue or plot, which he deems too structured and impersonal.
