Peace in History
Gittings, John. 2016. In: Richmond, Oliver, Sandra Pogodda, and Jasmin Ramovic, eds. ‘The Palgrave Handbook of Disciplinary and Regional Approaches to Peace.’ Springer: 21-31.
Gittings examines the theoretical element of histories of peace, drawing connections to IR whilst speaking of four strands of the ‘realist approach’, the theory of ‘justwar’, the ‘continuous narrative of peace’ and history of pacifist thought and action. The predominant focus is on the ‘realist approach’, which gained traction during the Cold War period, and how history needs to challenge this dominant mode of analysis to truly understand international peace narratives.
