This article builds on Galtung’s definitions of peacebuilding, violence and structural violence and calls for an holistic view of peacebuilding that acknowledges structural violence as being intrinsically related to environmental issues. The concept of environmental peacebuilding is explored through a structural approach, focusing on the deep economic and social implications which can only be alleviated through societal shifts. The authors provide an overview of environmental peace practices as a collaborative, cross-national and systemic process while acknowledging the current the absence of a strong theoretical framework to understand the relationship between climate crises and conflict.
