McCormick, Rick. 2020. In Sex, Politics, and Comedy: The Transnational Cinema of Ernst Lubitsch, 282–307. Indiana University Press.

In this book chapter, Rick McCormick discusses Ernst Lubitch’s 1942 comedy To Be Or Not To Be, a film about a small theatre troupe living in Poland during the Nazi occupation. McCormick analyzes Lubitsch’s characterization of most protagonists as being openly or subtly Jewish, as well as detailing how much of Lubitsch’s crew were Jewish refugees from Eastern Europe who were working in Hollywood.
