This article presents an analysis of the appearance of Habsburg monarchs and the pre-World War I Austrian Empire which was common in Austrian film from the 1910s until the 1950s and 1960s. These appearances were partly attributed to audience reactions to topical films and newsreels in the 1910s. Particularly after World War II the Habsburgs were used in films to glorify a “golden age” in Austria’s history and promote nationalism within the country.
